Ceramics Hand Painted
Summary
Debra's paintings on clay and canvas celebrate the beauty of brushwork and layering of colour. Over twenty years of experience is reflected in the confidence and deliberate mark making that results in an elegant layering of translucent washes of bright colour, slip trailed line and leaf like brush strokes.
Debra's Ukrainian heritage is about colour, dance and passion. Born and raised in Vegreville, which is steeped in tradition, has been an obvious influence on her painted ceramic plates and paintings. They are full of energy and movement with an underlying reference to the decorative art nouveau decorative style, which blossomed in Europe in the early 1920's, melded with the American abstract expressionist painting movement from the 1960's.
Solo painting exhibitions include the Justina Barnicke gallery in Toronto in 1991, the Budapest Galleria in 1994 and inclusion in some new Alberta art, a group show at the Edmonton art gallery in 1992. Debra received her masters of fine arts from the Ohio state university in 1990 and since then has been a full time practicing artist. Debra's Calgary based studio is nationally recognized for the Artables hand painted ceramics.
