Bone Carver

Summary

Dusty first became interested in the art of antler carving from the elders in Tuktoyaktuk, North West Territories, while working in the arctic Oil industry in the 1980s. He was born in Athabasca, Aalberta in 1945 and was raised in Westlock. He spent much of his early life involved In the logging, mining and construction industries. He still works as a heavy equipment operator and now lives in crescent valley, British Columbia. Being a Metis, Dusty was attracted to art and culture of the Indian and Inuit people. He had no formal training but as he began to experiment with antler carving, he developed his own unique style. Inspired by the antler itself, he carves shapes of animals and birds that he was familiar with in the arctic. Each carving is totally original, in that no two antlers are ever alike. Dusty first looks to find inspiration in an antler, then strips the antler of its rough outer layer and begins shaping with files and sandpaper. The final buffing gives the carving its smooth and high gloss finish. Dusty has carvings in many art galleries throughout Alberta and B.C. and some have found homes throughout the world. He has won awards for his unique craftsmanship. Dusty welcomes you to share in his love of carving. Only when you see and handle these beautiful pieces of art will you be able to appreciate what he creates.
