Soapstone Carver Abstract Shaman

Summary

Arluk who currently resides at Arviat began to teach himself how to carve soapstone at age 9. In the1960s he was influenced by sculptors Tiktak and Kavik and John Pangnark. He has a unique style of semi-abstraction and depicts single figures such as hunters and mothers with babies in their hoods. Usually he groups figures together to form abstracted compositions of gently curving forms that undulate rythmically. His sculptures often have antler parts added that protrude in complex patterns from the stone. His pieces have appeared in exhibtions all over the United States including New York, L.A., San Francisco, St. Louis, and Seattle. Internationally, George's abstract creations have appeared on numerous occasions throughout France, including Paris, Manheim Germany, Edegem Belgium and Sydney Australia to name a few. His father Sevuoi Aiyarani was also carver. His brother Charlie Panigoniak a well known singer, song-writer in the north.
